Cathedral of Brixen: A must-see landmark
The Cathedral of Brixen & the Cloister

The Cathedrale Square is the heart and centre of the city. The Cathedral of Brixen is one of the most important religious buildings in the Alps, as well as one of the most popular places to visit in South Tyrol. Originally an Ottonian building, it underwent Romanesque renovations to the nave and aisles around 1200, including the crypt, three apses, and two towers of the façade. A new Baroque structure was erected between 1745 and 1754, featuring frescoes by Paul Troger and a high altar by Theodor Benedetti. The classical entrance hall by Jakob Pirchstaller was added around 1783.

The Cloister is a splendid Romanesque structure with vaults from the 14th century. Its magnificent frescoes, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, show the evolution of medieval art. A true highlight of any visit to Brixen.

Brixen things to do: Discover the confluence of the rivers Eisack & Rienz
The confluence of the rivers Eisack and Rienz

Brixen was frequently hit by floods in the past. The unfortunate confluence of the rivers Rienz and Eisack favored this. Therefore, after the great flood of 1882, the confluence was regulated. Now the Rienz and Eisack rivers meet at the southern part of the Rapp gardens, which were created as part of the regulation. To underline this great step and the importance of water for Brixen, the annual Water Light Festival in May features an installation at the confluence. Exploring this spot is one of the lesser-known yet fascinating things to do in Brixen, Italy.
