Esther Stocker
Square
Train station
Esther Stocker expresses herself through lines, grids, right angles and the non-colours black and white. Inspired by a constructivist, geometric tradition, the artist finds her own perspective and philosophy in it and uses her work to explore relationships and structures as well as the contradictions of life. Through disruptions and errors in her grids, Stocker raises questions for viewers about disruptions and errors in systems that consciously or unconsciously guide, organise, and influence all of our lives.
For the Water Light Festival 2024, the artist creates the work SQUARES for the railway station in Brixen. The video projection is the continuation of an installation that was shown in an interior space as part of the Klanglicht Graz festival in 2022. The title refers to the public space in front of the station (square), as well as to the geometric shape of the square. Stocker is interested in this shape because of its simplicity as well as its complexity. In the video projection, it is visualised as galactic and infinite geometry in the form of light on the station building. Naturally, the surroundings of the work and thus its identity are transformed. This is where the artist's interest lies: transforming something familiar and unremarkable, such as a railway station, into something less familiar. The investigation of structural ideas and systems of perception are also an important aspect, as is the immediate possibility of entering the artwork.
